Aloha and welcome! E Komo mai! My name is Sherron, but my alias is Gecko or Geckohale. I love geckos ...
This page was created as an edifice to the things I love in life ... such as rats, sea kayaking, poetry, the Big Island of Hawaii, my husband Dennis, my best friend Carla, bats, bees, Lilo & Stitch, and other pleasures of life ... but not necessarily in that order!
Interested in visiting the Big Island of Hawaii? Hale Pōhaku (hale-pohaku.com), our large oceanfront condo on the Kona side of the Big Island, is available for short-term and vacation rentals. This sunset picture was taken from our lānai (veranda).
Beautiful sunset at Hale Pōhaku ...
Some of my favorites ...
- Get hooked on the Big Island of Hawaii! These are a couple of my favorite Hawaii sites:
Find out everything you ever wanted to know
about visiting or moving to Kona on the Big Island by visiting KonaBob's KonaWeb® site! You can also sign up for the KONAWEB newsletter and join the forums, where you can get help about any and everything Kona from knowledgeable and friendly folks. You'll find information on everything from beaches, activities, camping, golf, the volcano, dining, Hawaiian art and culture — to real estate and building your own home! So check out the best guide to beautiful Kona anywhere on the net!
- And if you can't live in Hawaiʻi,
you can at least listen to the wonderful Hawaiian music offered by Aloha JOE®! The Aloha Joe Radio Show provides a great selection of Hawaiian music 24-hours every day via the Internet. We are partial to slack key guitar ourselves, but he offers a wide variety of artists and styles, and even takes requests! His site also includes Hawaiian recipes, contests, links and everything Hawaiian. And if you live in Southern California, check out his calendar of events for Hawaiian music concerts at the Ruth B. Shannon Center for the Performing Arts at Whittier College. They offer an Aloha Series that is truly wonderful!

Honeybees! Discover how beneficial these insects are to our economy and our food supply by visiting our sweet little honeybee friends at the Carl Hayden Bee Research Center in Tucson, Arizona. Even if you only like meat and hate vegetables, your beef is dependent upon alfalfa which is dependent upon honeybee pollination.
We kept honeybees more for the enjoyment of the bees themselves than for the honey. In fact, keeping up with the prodigious amounts of honey the little gals made became quite a burden. We got over 350 pounds of honey from our single hive in our first season — a lot of work to extract! And honey is heavy, too! But I love watching bees and listening to their hummm. Especially in mid-afternoon at
playtime
when the young bees come out of the hive and learn to fly. They all orient toward the hive and there is such a large number of young humming bees around, it is such a lovely sight. So pleasant and relaxing to sit and watch and enjoy.Yeah, that's me on the right, in my younger days. I loved taking macro photos of my bees (1:1 with macro lens and extension tube) and they were agreeable subjects. I never got stung taking photos, because I never crushed any of my bees. That's the reason for my getup — so I could feel them when they landed on me, so I wouldn't accidentally squeeze them. If you squeeze a bee, she can sting you faster than you can crush her, guaranteed! Besides, I love my bees and never wanted to hurt them.
Unfortunately, we had to give up our bees, because it just became too hard to keep up with the honey work and you can't stop a bee from making honey! They will keep making honey as long as there is nectar to gather. But we got old and our bones got brittle (osteoporosis) and we were just no longer able to heft those supers of honey anymore. We sure miss them, but do enjoy the bees around our flowers here in Kona, Hawaiʻi now.

Go batty at the Bat Conservation International (BCI) site (and learn how important bats are to our ecology and future).
-
Sea kayaking and kayak surfing! Read about our paddle to California's Anacapa Island from Ventura Harbor, plus other information on kayaking! Although now that we live in Kona, Hawaiʻi, we are thinking about taking up outrigger canoeing instead!
-
Lovable rats make the most wonderful pets! Meet our darling little rattie friends at Dennis' gallery! You can also get great information on pet rats from the online Rat Fan Club online.

Wee Forest Folk (WFF) aren't rats, but they are little collectible mice (and other animal) figurines with whimsical faces and bright shiny eyes! They are hand sculpted by Annette, Willy and Donna Peterson back in Massachusetts. The WFF are quite enchanting and have a large number of admirers! Check out these WFF for sale!

Cooking ... well, that's not really accurate, it's more like least collecting recipes! The best recipe program ever is MasterCook from Sierra Home! Sadly, Sierra Home was bought out, but the program is still available in multiple versions and in its latest from the new company at various locations. All the help and information you will ever need is available from the great people at the MasterCook Discussion List @

I also loved Pixar's Ratatouille, the story of a rat who wants to be a chef in the best restaurant in Paris. The movie was excellent and the story heart-warming and enchanting.
And did I mention that I also love rats? And eating good food? I loved the movie as much for the food as the rats, which were very lifelike in the way they moved and reacted, while at the same time had those funny little rubbery hands and feet. The Pixar folk actually kept live rats around to study so that they would
get it right,
and they pretty much did, to their credit. Just an all-around great movie. Second only to Lilo & STiTch in my opinion.
Favorite Quotes:
The worst day in Kona ... is better than the best day on the mainland!
Even if you are on the right track; if you just sit there, you'll get run over!
